Good games for an 8 year old relatively new to games?

He can't figure out FPS games just yet, so I'm looking for something a little easier to get into. Violence isn't really an issue.

So far, I've come up with:

Any LEGO game, Toy Story 3, Marvel: UA (Maybe) and Sonic All Stars Racing.

Oh, and I'll be sure to bring up Kinect with his family, but I don't know if they'll have the money to drop on that.

TMNT: generous checkpoints, fairly straightforward, and unlimited lives

Sonic's Sega Genesis Collection: lots of games that are fairly simple to get into like the Sonic games

Project Gotham Racing 4 should be simple. Best racer i've played this gen too. Only $10 brand new.

This. It's very easy to pick up and play, but isn't ridiculously dull and lacking in content like most kiddy racers like Mario Kart.

I think the LEGO games are really great for kids, there easy, fun and there is no fail state. Also they are co-op so any parent or sibling can play with them.
