year-long warranty had expired (I bought it in September 2010).

I figured I'd phone EB before going through Microsoft and they let me swap mine for another one :)

I don't think EB was ever as bad as gamestop. Gamestop is an unethical american company, and I believe EBgames (or Electronics Boutique as it was formerly known as) was canadian, and Gamestop bought out EB. But generally EB seems to have better employees still despite being part of the same company.

Corporate sets the policy, and I doubt GS in the states would have allowed this to happen.

My 360 recently scratched my Arkham City disc. I went to EB and they gave me a new disc even though I had no receipt and I didn't buy that $2 warranty they push on you.

I've also been treated like crap at another EB games. I think it really depends on the person working in the store.
