Be Cautious
Study Your Enemies
Watch Stamina

I'm actually finding that having played and beaten the Witcher 2 helps just due to the fact that it taught me to play strategically.

Do NOT waste any points in resistance. Simply not worth it.

The level of combat in Dark Souls is on a completely different level from the Witcher games.
You'd be better off with experience from a game like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden.
