Donkey Kong Racing was obviously pretty heavily tied to Nintendo as a franchise, and as Rare approached the finalization of a buyout deal with Microsoft it was clear that the game had no future, at least with the ape’s as characters. We switched it around to be a Sabreman game, and there was a great early Xbox prototype – but someone, somewhere decreed that it was a little too old-school for the kind of ‘revolutionary gaming experiences’ that the Xbox was capable of delivering, and so it started down a path of meandering changes, updates and ‘evolution’ that finally saw it run out of steam and fall over.

Stupid ass company. Why did they buy RARE if you don't want them to make RARE games?

Buying Rare and keeping them from making great software for Nintendo/Sony is still a very effective strategy.

Except for the fact that Rare's last game for Nintendo, Star Fox Adventures, wasn't really that good and most of the good talent for Rare had left for Free Radical. Microsoft grossly overpaid for Rare and didn't really know what they had really purchased.

Most of their good talent ? Nah, it was just a few people who created and joined Free Radical, Banjo Kazooie team stayed for example.

No one ruined Rare except for the consumers that didn't buy wonderful games like Viva Pinata and BKNB, and allowed Kinect Sports to fly off the shelves.
