Getting a headset...

I'm looking at either the Turtle Beach X12 for $60 or the DX12 (surround sound version) for $120. While that sounds nice, I'm apprehensive about spending that much money on a headset, so I ask...is the surround sound really worth the extra $60?

I know nothing about the headsets you have mentioned, but in answer to your Surround Sound question; Yes, it is well worth the extra $60.

The DX12 is just the X12 run through the DSS box right?

Yeah, thats what the Turtle Beach description says. Is that how it normally works?

Indeed, that's what it is. I personally think the surround sound is definitely worth it. The amplified stereo is nicer than nothing, but if you can why wouldn't you go for surround? You might want to read up on the DSS2, which would come with your DX12 as opposed to the original DSS. I read some funky things about it. If it is lame you might want to consider the X42's or something.

I've use the original DSS with the PX21 and the old X11 as well as those headphones sans DSS. It makes a difference. The DSS box has been retired to the PS2 for movies with a set of headphones and is still useful.

Ok, so one more question...wired or wireless headphones? This might not matter ultimately since I really don't want to spend a lot of money, but I have heard the DX12 + DSS2 = a LOT of wires. Is it difficult to set the wires up (mic in the controller, headset wires into DSS2 and DSS2 wires into 360)?

I prefer wired. On the 360 my setup was USB from Xbox to DSS. Toslink from Xbox to DSS. Those both ran in back. The headset USB and audio connected in front. The chat cable ran from controller to headset inline controls. So it was a lot of wires but it wasn't messy.

Hey, you want to play games? Get the Turtle Beach and go play grabass. If you want a real man's headset, you get the Sennheiser / Mixamp Combo.
