Nope, these are PS3 "shipments" up to today (which after 6 years, are still not measured as the 360's due to Sony manupulation - ask me why, its interesting) Xbox 360's shipments are as of the end of September...and there's going to be a bigger gap in sales this year than last year (over 2 million).

By Jan 1st 2013, assuming we survive, the gap will be the biggest its been
since 2009.

$$$

That's what companies care about.

Sony Fanboys: "Yay! Sony sold more PS3 consoles! And with a year fewer too! LOL!1!"

Microsoft: *Smoking an expensive cigar, driving in a Ferrari, and using money as toilet paper* "Good for you."

Sony tried too hard to be top dog with blu-ray and it cost them. They may have a lot of systems out there, but they, by far, made the least money this gen. Plus, they backed themselves into a corner. Now their rabid fanboys MUST have the best graphics, which will continually put Sony into a situation of selling their consoles at a loss. People keep talking about PS4, but I don't think Sony even knows what to do with that yet.

i am on the political boards a lot and most of this ps3 vs 360 talk reminds me of conservatives vs liberals arguments from the political board. not saying which group of fanboys i think act like one of those political groups.

Nope. Microsofts first profits this gen happened in the Halo 3 quarter ( 1st July 2007-September 30th 2007) - Between 19-21 months after launch.

Sonys first started making money on PS3 by their own admission in June 2010 - 42 months after launch.

Such things are immaterial now though, the PS3 game division made a $billion loss again last year. Microsofts EDD, did not.

Luckily for Sony, Americans don't just buy products from their own country. If they did, the PS3 wouldn't even be in the race.

You guys suck at math.

The PS3 has almost caught up to the 360. They haven't caught up yet.

Since there are only 2 current-gen systems, neither of them is in "3rd place".

You don't know if it's caught up yet, if it's still catching up, or if it's surpassed it.

All you know, and all we or any of us know, is that as of September 30, 2012 the Xbox 360 was at 70.0 million, and as of October 31, 2012, the PS3 was at 70.2 million.

The PS3 is reportedly higher, but the report is one month fresher for PS3. Now, if the 360 sold over 200k in October 2012, then the PS3 still has a little bit of catching up to do. We may never know, because the fiscal calendars don't like up. The safest thing to assume is that they're essentially, for all intents and purposes, even.

Third the store system for the 360 is kind of weak. When I want to buy a game or movie or anything in the store I want to know exactly how much I am paying. I don't want to buy 800 points, use 600 of them, and then have a balance remaining that I will probably never use. Right now I have 250 leftover points on my system that have been there for over 2 years. Money not well spent. On the PS3 I can just click a game, use the "add exact amount" function, buy the game, and have no leftover money to spend later. Convenient.

This is no longer true, since MS added the option to use Paypal and credit cards as well.

My mistake then, but I haven't used my 360 since the change.

not talking about the same thing here. what im referring to is making money off of the consoles not there respective gaming divisions in general.

sony started to make money on each console sold 6 months before MS on the 360

but who cares, as long as all three remain in the race to give each other competition we win :D
