Will games on my 360 look noticeably worse with VGA?

#1GraybesPosted 11/20/2012 9:04:56 AM
I'm looking to change up my gaming setup a bit now that I mostly play PC games now. I'd like to bring my Xbox onto my desk and use my monitor to play it. My current tv is a bit too far away for me to really enjoy my console games and I am using hdmi.

My monitor however only takes DVI and VGA because its a bit older now. My video card is using the DVI input so the VGA is what is left for my Xbox.

I'm just curious if my games will look noticeably different using VGA. Well basically if they will look bad? I can deal with a little less quality of an image or ease of use of my Xbox but I don't want absolutely awful images. Is VGA still decent?

Would an HDMI to VGA help at all? Or would it just be a waste of money. Thanks for your help everyone!

Sounds like it's time to upgrade your monitor to something with multiple HDMI ports and use a DVI to HDMI adapter for your PC, then another HDMI for the 360.

Or you could upgrade the TV and use it as a monitor for both the PC and 360 with PiP support for the TV channels.

Getting a new monitor is my plan if VGA looks absolutely terrible. I'm trying not to spend too much money at this point in my life. (About to start paying off my student loans)...I know monitors aren't break the bank expensive but if VGA is at least decent still I wouldn't just deal. I remember using VGA back when I had an original Xbox since they didn't have hdmi ports then and it looked ok my HDTV. But that was a while ago and games have been getting better looking obviously.

Honestly, VGA isn't that bad. What resolution is your monitor? That's more important.

VGA looks surprisingly good i think its because the video signal is analog initially and the hana chip is what converts it to a digital signal.

HOWEVER the quality of the cables matter for VGA, official ms cables will look better than some generic cables.

monster cables may even be worth it.

Still hoping for a Shenmue 3.

@Master_Bass

Monitor has a resolution of 1600x900. Good or bad for my situation?

@popping4it

I do have the official Microsoft Xbox 360 VGA HD cable. I bought it back when I got an HDTV but still had the old Xbox that didn't have an hdmi port.

Definitely not. I was using VGA with my Xbox for years and only changed to HDMI recently because it's less of a pain to put in and out. As far as picture quality there is no noticeable difference as long as you have a decent quality cable.

So there is an issue i dont think 1600x900 is a selectable resolution.

so the monitor will have to do some additional scaling. try the bolded and see which look the best since these are the only 16:9 aspect ratios...

640x480
848x480
1024x768
1280x720 *
1280x768
1280x1024
1360x768 *
1440x900
1680x1050
1920x1080 *

Alright cool thanks. I will have to set it up and try everything tonight. Hopefully I can play with the resolution and find something that looks decent. If not i guess the cheapest option is to get a new monitor.
