I'm hard pressed to think of AMAZING ones that surpass the originals. I mean yes there's quite a few that are better but not many that are in an "amazing" way. And the ones that are or are close are so more due to the advancement of technology than anything else.
Most of the ones this gen I wouldn't agree with at all. I mean personally I liked ME 1 more than 2 (or 3), Dark Souls was better than Demon's but didn't just fly right by it, etc etc.

Mega Man 2 Super Mario Bros. 3 Super Metroid The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Super Mario Galaxy 2 Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Red Dead Redemption Street Fighter 2 LittleBigPlanet 2 Kirby's Adventure Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Batman: Arkham City Rock Band 3 Pokemon Gold/Silver Versions Half-Life 2 Mortal Kombat II Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Assassin's Creed 2 Dark Souls Left 4 Dead 2
There's a lot of great videogame sequels. Much more so than movies.
I've played an hour of Portal 2 and I would like to nominate this one first. Dialogue, game play, aesthetic...everything about it is miles beyond the first. What a fantastic game so far.
Mass Effect 2 Borderlands 2
I agree with Borderlands 2 but disagree with Mass Effect 2. I think the first ME is much better. As for my own choices, Skyrim is a massive improvement over Oblivion and Arkham City is a pretty big improvement over Arkham Asylum, in my opinion. I also enjoyed Dead Space 2 more than the first Dead Space.
