Microsoft should be sweating bullets...

It's being released next year. That's all we know.

A dedicated hardware platform just for PC games.....

It's going to be obsolete inside of a year.

I would certainly consider buying a reasonably priced console if it allowed me to play all of my Steam games on my TV. Some big questions would obviously be:

1) What about game mods?

2) What about games that require mouse and keyboard?

3) What happens if and when it can't run certain games?

Microsoft should be more worried about Apple cannibalizing PC sales.

What about game mods?

They already try to kill game mods by trying to force an update to the latest patches of every game on Steam.

So with your economics degree you came up with an established business with a solid consumer base should be "sweating bullets" over a companies first foray into a "console". I'm sure they're aware but did you take in to consideration MS not allowing steam to sell their PC games or the other companies that are trying to start their own digital store fronts?

I don't know maybe Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo should be worried. I've a feeling that the Steam Box is going to be for a niche group of games. I do hope I'm wrong but I don't see it being as main stream as the consoles. PC people aren't going to bite because they have PCs, console gamers I think are going to be more interested in the traditional consoles ( i base this off nothing more than a feeling).

1. Valve is known for being mod friendly. I would be in disbelief if they said no mod support.
2. I would think they would allow full keyboard/mouse support.
3. This could potentially be a problem.

I've never experienced this.
