Hey all,

Got a capture card for Christmas, so I've finally got round to making myself a Youtube channel. My gamertag is Lazer, and I enjoy doing random crazy **** in games, so quite fittingly I've titled my channel 'Lazer's Collection'
I've uploaded my first video which is a mash up of Just Cause 2, Far Cry 3 and Red Dead, but it's only available on PC's at the moment due to a copyright music issue (Wish I knew that sooner before editing it to the music...)
I have a Skyrim compilation coming on there shortly, and will be adding similar stuff very often. While I would of course enjoy some 'likes and subscribes' (is that what you're meant to ask for?) I'm more interested in just finding out if this is the sort of stuff you'd enjoy watching, and what else could be done to it. Hopefully it at least entertains you for the duration of the video, and if so that's a start!

Constructive criticism or general abuse hurled at me are welcome :)

Thanks

The video is actually pretty entertaining, but you need better video titles if you want to attract viewers. "Classical Stupidity" works as a title for the content, but you need something that will draw a broader target audience. Something like "Just Cause 2: Ghost Ridin' The Whip", which is the first thought that popped into my mind when I saw you stand on the hood of the car as it drove over the cliff. Also, attach your video to a related video, even if it is loosely related. There are tons of Youtube videos based around the meme of "Fun things to do when bored in <insert game title>". Find a popular one and attach your video as a response (if the video host will allow you to). Also, since your video has next to no views, I suggest taking it down and simply making an edit for the music portion of the audio. I suggest Jamendo or Free Music Archive to find replacement music. Both sites host thousands of free songs that usually only require you to credit the original composer.

Like I said, the video was pretty funny and in fact made me think of times my brother and I would do ridiculous things in games, like taking a criminal to the tallest building in Spider-Man 2 and performing the spinning pile driver just to see if it would kill Spidey and the criminal (it doesn't). You can get a pretty popular channel going if you properly cultivate an audience.

Source: Youtube content creator for four years. 477 subscribers, ~250k views (141k from my direct channel and over 95k from affiliated channels and fan reposts of older content) , nationally recognized by Complex Magazine.

Also, I subscribed to your channel. Every new content creator deserves a few friends amongst their subscribers, so count me among those friends. Best of luck with your channel.

Thanks for the feedback, genuinely useful! I expected the usual drivel most on here would respond with. So with that new music edit I should just upload the version without music and then just add on the audio track from those sites? How will that work anyway? Will I have to add their music track onto it, and then just credit it in the description?
Also, I had no idea about attaching videos to related ones... how does that work?
I know, I know, i'm years behind here on starting a channel, but I had to start eventually!

You are very welcome. I know how much of a challenge it is to start a Youtube channel, so I sympathize with you. So to answer your questions...

1) I do not know what program you use to edit your videos together, but reopen your project and delete the current music file that you placed in the project and replace it with whatever song you find on Jamendo or Free Music Archive. Alternatively, you can keep your video as it is and use the Youtube video editor to place new audio to your video. Youtube has its own collection of royalty free music for just this type of situation.

2) How you credit the author of the music depends upon the creative commons license associated with whatever music file you are using from Jamendo or Free Music Archive. The page you download a song from should include information on what kind of credit is expected. I usually credit people in the video description, should I be using another person's content.

3) When you are on a video page and you click in the white box to leave a comment, you should see some blue text that says "Create a video response or Post." Click the blue text that says "Create a video response" and you will be taken to a new page where you will see a list of the content you have uploaded to your channel. Choose the video you wish to use as a response then click the blue button that says "Use the selected video." Some channel hosts require approval before a response can be posted, others do not. If it does, you will see a notice telling you such. If not, then your response will automatically be posted.

Lastly, don't feel bad. There is no real time frame for when one must create a channel. A lot of the more popular channels and content are fairly recent and built popularity by creating memes (unintentionally or intentionally) or riding the wave of popularity off of a meme (e.g. "stuff <insert race, color, creed> people say"). In fact, Natalie, the user who hosts the Community Channel is one of the few popular and consistent Youtubers who has truly been there since the beginning. As the old expression goes, there is no time like the present.

Fantastic response, helpful once again! OK I've understood most of that. What confuses me though is why my original video was flagged for copyright issues, yet has only been restricted for mobile devices. Why is that?
Also, will that 'warning' (or whatever it's called for copyright infringement) affect me in any way later on? If so, would it be advisable to just create a new channel now?

Could really do with some tips from people who are well accustomed to Youtube, so It's great to be having this conversation with ya!

Copyright infringement on Youtube is a pretty muddy issue to begin with. Some instances are regional, others are global. Sometimes it is about the nature of the rights regarding a particular copyright. In your case, taking down the video and using different music will remedy any future trouble. If the Youtube mods flag your channel too many times (completely subjective on what is "too many") then your entire channel can be shutdown. Since you only have two videos up and your only issue is the music involved with the video, you are fine for now. Worst case scenario is that Youtube removes the video themselves. But again, repeat offenses will get the ban hammer dropped on your account.

Then there are those instances where a video is really popular (meaning it can generate ad revenue for Google or the original IP holder) and the video will be left up despite being a blatant infringement. It is hardly equitable and far too difficult to tell just how much liberty one can take with posting content with copyrighted materials. Usually the only realm that is free from this legal madness are things purely based around video games. So channels devoted to video game OSTs, or remixes of game music, or video game paradoies etc, are often left untouched. Even things like Mugen videos avoid being flagged. This is most likely because video game companies couldn't care less unless you are pirating a full blown game or distributing a pirated game.
