Credit card info was stolen through Live

Negative: I just checked my e-mail to see someone tried to buy 6000 MSP through Zune on my card. Three times, since it wouldn't go through.

Positive: It wouldn't go through because that card is actually cancelled and replaced because of a different matter entirely. Live, however, wouldn't let me remove the card without placing a different card on the account, which I didn't want to do for precisely this reason. I'd rather deal in points cards and have nothing on my account.

So thankfully the thieves had outdated information. I already went through and changed security on my MSN and Profile security side, but is there anything else I should be doing to double check the source of the intrusion?

That's weird. I just went to https://live.xbox.com/en-US/ManagePaymentOptions and removed my CC with no problems. You don't have your sub set to 'auto renew' or have an active sub that was paid for with a CC do you? That will prevent you from removing a CC.

A Jose Canseco bat? Tell me...you didn't pay money for this.

The source of the intrusion is likely social engineering on the thief's part. Do you have a particularly desirable user name?

It gives me the "This payment option cannot be removed at this time" message. And no, I've never had my sub set to Auto-Renew, and in fact just re-upped live in October with a 12 Month Card.

Shura, my username is the same one I use on this forum.

You're gonna have to call MS support line to take that card off. I actually had points on my account, and thieves used all of it on Fifa dlc. Apparently I had the same password on an EA site as my live account (stupid, I know). I had my live suspended for a week, they gave me back my points, and they removed my cc (thankfully it wasn't used) info.

I would change the password on the live account, make sure it's not the same as ANY other account you have.

Someone tried to use my debit card in India.... thankfully they didn't have my pin and my bank caught on and cancelled my card right away because they found it suspicious. Good on them.

EDIT: I lknow nothing to do with Xbox but yea.... this crap happens. My debit card has never been online either.

Thanks fffez. I keep my passwords pretty varied, but I did spend an hour this afternoon changing everything out (good a time as any).

I'll give the support line a call and see about getting that card off. The cancelled card in question had an expiration date of 1/13; would it just fall off on it's own at the end of the month? Hypothetically.

I would still call. Also, see if you have your tag linked to any sites (Halo double XP, BF3, etc) and decide whether you still want it linked on there. I don't know why it would be an issue, but people are getting creative these days and I personally wouldn't take a chance with that stuff especially if your CC is still listed on the account

That's a great idea with the linking. The only one I know offhand is the link/profile tag on my Game Informer profile.

I have points, but nobody spent them. And the alert e-mails were sent specifically by Zune, not XBL. I found that weird. When I called my bank, they couldn't see any activity on that card number until the rep dug into the actual electronic machine talk code, then she saw the failed transactions.
