Name a game released in the last few years that truly impressed you?

I have to go with Alan Wake. I was impressed all the way until the end by the graphics, story, game play, etc. It was " just right ". Do you have a game that truly or surprisingly left you impressed?

Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 2, Deus Ex Human Revolution and Skyrim.

How few of years are we talking about here?

I'll say Skyrim.

Skyrim, Halo 4, Red Dead Redemption, The Walking Dead, and Dust: AET.

Bro, when you tack on mass, you sacrifice flexibility. That's just a straight up fact

In terms of going into a game thinking I might not like it and being surprised.

Sleeping Dogs
That game is seriously good. Great story with good humor mixed in, great fighting, fun city, I even enjoy all the dlc.

There are others, but that one just stuck out

The Witcher 2 and Dust: AET are some of my favorite games from 2012. Gotta love the smaller devs and their heart, sweat, and soul they put into their games. God bless 'em.

I like this answer. Most of the other games posted like Red Dead and Skyrim were impressive but the kind of games you expected to be. Alan Wake was a excellent surprise.

Red Dead Redemption (overall scope, and how well the wild-west was portrayed)
Borderlands 1 & 2 (the amount of replayability)
Dark Souls (the atmosphere and boss battles)
Dead Island (more realistic approach to zombie apocalypse and brutal combat, and damage system)
Dragon's Dogma (the way Dragons are portrayed, and the ability to climb on bosses)
Uncharted 2 & 3 (the story and setting, and story-telling)
Walking Dead (story-telling & character design)
Gears of War 2 & 3 (the best 3rd-person combat with good cover system)
