The reason that this, and basically every other, game has such a huge variation between review and critic scores is a very simple one that most people overlook. It has nothing to do with bribes, or advertising, or any of that stupid crap.
It has to do with the fact that video-game reviewers are trained, from the ground up, to separate objective and subjective tastes, and that is an ability that 95% of the general public (and 99% of the internet) don't have. In short, reviewers review the game based on what it is, not based on what THEY want it to be.
Take Call of Duty for example. Personally, I hate it. I find the multiplayer to be too fast to have any kind of strategy whatsoever, I find the maps are designed with defense in mind turning most of the objective game-modes into snail-paced camp-fests (nothing better than a 30 minute long capture the flag match that ends 0-0) and, for the most part, the campaigns don't really do much for me.
^All of those things up there. All subjective points. I can still plainly see that the game is, objectively, incredibly well put together it runs smooth as ice, looks great, has tight controls, and has one of the most robust online multi-player suites around. I can EASILY see WHY so many people love it and I've never played a CoD game that deserved less than maybe an 8/10
For most gamers in the online world, they can't separate "I don't like it" from "It is not good"
There are plenty of things that I hate that I have to admit are, objectively, pretty good. There are also plenty of things that I like that are, objectively, really bad. For most gamers, it boils down to them saying
"ZOMG TIS GAME IS TOO FAST AND EASY AND DANTES HAIR IS BLACK AND TEY SUCKED TE SOUL OUT OF TE FRANCHISE AND BLAH BLAH BLAH" 0/10!!!!!!
It happens with every major movie, and it happens with every major game, so don't feel bad about DMC.
Also, it has to do with our "Either it's the best ever or it's a total bag of ****" mentality. That's why if there are 1000 review scores, 900 of them will be 0,1,2, or 8,9,10 --- 84% of people make up their statistics. If you are one of the 16% that don't, put this in your signature. |
