sounds to me like DR2 has what i call the "sequel problem" while trying to fix issues and expand on one, it lost some of the 1st games magic. i'll definitely be getting DR1 360 version and if i like it i'll try 2 but wont be expecting as much from it.
Dead Space 2 didnt impress me either or BioShock 2 or even Batman Arkham City imo
I personally despised the Dead Rising series. So - none of them. If you're the kind of person (unlike me) who's into non-stop escorting of retarded NPCs, time-management and a ridiculously stupid storyline and dialogue, I'd recommend DR2. The only reason I actually sat around and got all the achievements was to spite a friend who loved that steaming dog turd of a game, but didn't have the patience to get the multiplayer achievements. By the time I was done with that game, I was wishing somebody would craft a creative weapon (the one thing I did like) and put me out of my misery.
The first Dead Rising is probably my biggest disappointment this whole generation...especially after playing the demo. The demo was soooo fan, just running around trying to stay alive and killing zombies. No stupid super strict time limits no slow-brained NPCs...just fun. Then I played the game and HOLY CRAP was it ever frustrating.
DR2 helped a lot of the issues. The NPCs were a little better and the time limits not as strict, but it was still more of the same. For me though it was infinitely more playable.
I'd suggest you get the prequel to DR2 on XBLA and play that. If you like that go ahead and get 2. My advice to to skip 1 completely though. If you had the main guy from 2 maybe try the re-imagining with Frank.

I liked both DR1 and DR2 for different reasons, but DR1 was the better of the two for being original.
What kept me from really enjoying DR2 was the loading times, and the fact that there was no free-roam mode; everything had a time-limit. But I hear that was remedied in DR2: OTR, so I might pick it up for cheap at some point.
Though to be honest with you, my interest in zombies was never that great and it's situational whether I am in the mood for them anyway. The Walking Dead (arcade) game was the last zombie-related thing I actually enjoyed because it was different and had immense personality.
Eh, to each their own yadda yadda. From what I've seen and read, though, it seems DR2: OTR is probably the best in the series at this point.
Probably Dead Rising 3, which Capcom has hinted at, but hasn't actually confirmed.
other than that, it's a toss up between DR2 & DR2: OtR. Of the Record offers a new game-mode and an all new area, but I personally like the character Chuck greene. Plus, if you get the Case-Zero DLC then it correlates with the regular DR2 game. But it really just boils down to character preference...although the new area in Off the Record (Uranus Zone) is pretty damn SWEET !
