| I played the original DOOM 3 on Xbox, never finished it, I was at the time still heavily playing FFXI Online on the PS2 and it was time consuming.
Anyways, the game was good, and fun, a very, how would I say it...core first person shooter with jump scares, and a great creepy atmosphere.
I picked up the BFG Edition, and I'm about 4-5 levels in, and it's really really fun. It's a great break from the current era of FPS games. Don't get me wrong, I don't feel CoD is taking the genre in the BEST direction, but the CoD type games are fun to hop in and play a few games, and they aren't bad, they might be on the same engine, with refinements, but they are time wasters for me when I'm bored.
That said, I wish more companies would make games like this. Take it back to the previous era, which wasn't bad at all, people have just gotten so used to certain aspects. Such as a open level design, freedom to customize character/weapons, a deep/dramatic and/or explosive blockbuster storyline. Little things like ADS, frequent checkpoints, and grand AI that knows what to do in EVERY situation. None of these are bad, they are all great additions to a great genre.
I would love to see a throw back FPS, similar to the style of DOOM I/II/III and similar era titles. Linear design, secret areas, a set weapons list were ammo was abundant, but you couldn't just grab any weapon after you run out. Something with good AI, obviously, but a more straight forward in your face like the old games, where they come for you, and not the system used nowadays where there are tons of enemies all taking cover, and maybe a few advance slowly tossing grenades and using military tactics.
Just old school. It's not really nostalgia, because I can still pop in the old Quake 4 for Xbox and play through it and have a blast, or Unreal, for MP, or as I found out today, DOOM 3.
I'm not hating on current era FPS, they're great.

| Current FPS' have evolved for the better. Don't get me wrong, I still love Doom 3. And BFG was an amazing look back at the older style of FPS, but genres need to evolve.
Doom 4 though...Damn, I can't wait. --- Royal with Cheese. What do they call a Big Mac? Big Mac's a Big Mac, but they call it Le Big Mac. |
