I personally could do without the health regen, but I really like the ability to aim down the sights.
I also agree that the two-weapon limit is lame. At least give me 3 or 4 (similar to Borderlands), that is tied with the D-Pad.

I'd say to keep your eyes open for the new Aliens game. Kinda get the feeling it's got a little of the DOOM vibe going on. Plus 4 player drop in/out co-op and some neat mp modes.

Can't wait for Tuesday!

See, that's the thing. The reason we have the two weapon limit is because of Halo. At the time no other FPS on consoles seemed to be able to get around the fact that the controller was not a substitute for a keyboard, but Halo changed all that and set the standard.

But since then plenty of games have come out and offered some great solutions to switching between multiple weapons. The d-pad works great, and as Half Life 2 shows, you can map more than 4 weapons to it. Then there's the weapon wheel option that pauses the game while you choose.

I'm really hoping having a touchpad on every next gen console will help bring back the multiple weapon trend. If nothing else, touch pads are perfect for menu selections.

Current FPS' have evolved for the better. Don't get me wrong, I still love Doom 3. And BFG was an amazing look back at the older style of FPS, but genres need to evolve.

Doom 4 though...Damn, I can't wait.

First person shooters have devolved. Remember when you could carry as many weapons as you wanted? When you had to learn the map instead of blindly following an onscreen indicator to your next objective? When you didn't get a "Press A to open" prompt EVERY TIME you faced a door or filing cabinet? When auto-recharging health didn't exist, so you were sometimes forced to fight when at your last few percentage of health, desperate to find a health pack (that is true tension, what FPS games should be about)? When games tried to be games, and not interactive movies?

Games like Perfect Dark had the problem cracked - you could either hold down A and a weapon wheel would appear, or if you prefered, you could pause the game, choose your weapon from the inventory menu, and when you unpaused the game, your ingame character changed to that weapon.

That said, I wish more companies would make games like this. Take it back to the previous era, which wasn't bad at all, people have just gotten so used to certain aspects. Such as a open level design, freedom to customize character/weapons, a deep/dramatic and/or explosive blockbuster storyline. Little things like ADS, frequent checkpoints, and grand AI that knows what to do in EVERY situation. None of these are bad, they are all great additions to a great genre.

I would love to see a throw back FPS, similar to the style of DOOM I/II/III and similar era titles. Linear design, secret areas, a set weapons list were ammo was abundant, but you couldn't just grab any weapon after you run out. Something with good AI, obviously, but a more straight forward in your face like the old games, where they come for you, and not the system used nowadays where there are tons of enemies all taking cover, and maybe a few advance slowly tossing grenades and using military tactics.

Wait, what? So you want a more linear game with less customization, bad AI and a lack luster story. Is this a joke topic? I don't understand how bad is good. Sure we all had fun with Doom and what not but damn man really.

The game already exists TC, its called Halo 1-4. Most of it is pretty linear corridor shooting but theres a few open levels too.
