Many peoples exchanges games with friends, so sometimes used game cost you not 10 $, but nothing.
If you dont have friends, you are really can relax and stop bothering yourself with used games block, yes.

Exactly. I don't personally buy games used but I do borrow games all of the time so I don't have to spend unnecessary money on something I'll probably play one time through for 10 hours. This whole thing is basically saying you don't actually own the material you paid for...which is ridiculous

It's not ridiculous - if software is licensed, not sold (as 2 circuits in the US currently hold) then you do not have the right to transfer the license without permission of the company that granted said license.

I just got done voting in the poll and normally I vote with the majority but when I voted that I wouldn't care at all I was shocked to see there were only 3% of you out there like me. I can't quite catch onto why so many people out there are so obsessed with used games. Is the $10 Gamestop gives you off the next used C.O.D really that big of a deal?

So I'm wondering, do THAT many of you really buy that many used games?

And

If by blocking used games Microsoft can make the price of all new games at most $40 by going completely digital would you still have the same opinion?

You really think they're going to lower game prices? If anything they'll be the same price, digital only, one off codes that you can't share between profiles or consoles. In other words, worthless.

So you are perfectly fine with not being able to sell something you paid for that you could for about 25 years (or longer) previously? Unless these games significantly drop in price ($20/game) this will be the first system I will refuse to purchase in the past 25 years (along with the new PlayStation if they take the same route).

Personally, I despise the thought of blocking used games. It's not like these companies need more money. Maybe they should stop wasting funds and resources on things like the pores on someone's skin or the individual blades of grass blowing in the wind and wisely spend it on, oh I don't know...novel gameplay mechanics.

You do realize why games fall in price, right? Because they're not selling and retailers want to get them off their shelves.

There's no worry about unwanted inventory with digital distribution.

So then why does Stream have crazy cheap sales all the time? Oh yeah, it's because making games cheaper means more of them will sell. You can't have a game that old and expect people to pay 60 bucks when you can find it on Amazon for 26. That is just ASKING people to buy used. If publishers want their GoDs to make money, they have to be priced competitively.

Why is it that people always mistake being educated about a subject with me arguing FOR a specific viewpoint? I simply said it's not "ridiculous" - it is not unreasonable, I gave you a perfectly logical reason as to why people may not be allowed to re-sell software. It's not the prevailing opinion (the vast majority of jurisdictions in the US state that software is sold, not licensed) and it's not my preferred interpretation, but I can at least understand the reasoning behind it.

That might be the reason right there, now that I think about it. People who can't comprehend the logical arguments for positions opposite theirs will often take things personally and attribute my statement of fact as my individual opinion.

people will be divided between online communities who buy all their games new and officially and offline communities who hack their console to play used or copied games.

You'll hardly hear anything from the latter but they'll be in large numbers. But they'll be shunned by gamefaqs and other sites.

For those of you that hold the opinion of "these companies don't need more money", unfortunately that's what business is all about. Companies such as Gamestop owe it to the shareholders to generate as much revenue as possible for investors to capitalize on investments. It's no different than what game developers and publishers need to do... make money, make profit.

To pull support of the secondhand gaming market affects stockholders, as well as jobholders within the organization, and I am not just talking about your everyday Joe who is working behind the counter at your local store. Kill off an entire market, and you effectively cost jobs within management, accounting, marketing, human resources, IT, etc etc etc. as companies would inevitably be forced to shutter operations. Not to mention the oligopolistic practices that would be at play if Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all forcibly block out this well established market.

Gaming companies should embrace the symbiotic relationship that currently exists with the creation of the secondhand gaming industry. Consumers (including myself) actually use the secondhand market to sell games that they are done with after playing. The dollars generated from that potentially go towards buying new games that otherwise would not have been purchased.
