The Xbox 360 started out with a 20 GB proprietary hard drive, then Microsoft eventually released 60 GB, 120 GB, 250 GB, and 320 GB hard drives for us to upgrade to.

Do you guys think Microsoft will continue to use its proprietary hard drives in the Next Xbox, or will we finally be able to use our own external hard drives like Sony and Nintendo let its customers do?

MS allows you to use personal external drives. There are some caveats to that, but you definitely can.

You can't grab a standard SATA 2.5" drive and throw it in. So yeah, they pretty much make you use a proprietary drive.

As long as it's as easy to make/buy a bootleg one next time around I don't mind either way. But I expect it will be proprietary again

Proprietary

Adjective: Of or relating to an owner or ownership.

Noun: An owner; proprietor.

Now you know, and knowledge is power!

Since current rumor has all next Xbox's equip with 500GB HDD's already, this question is possibly irrelevant. Something tells me they will be built in and part of the system like the original Xbox, not removable like the 360 and PS3 HDD's are.

Proprietary just means that it has to be branded by them basically. Like how you can't just buy a PS3 controller and use it on a 360 and stuff like that. Usually exclusive to a single manufacturer.

Like if the 360 instead of using USB used some weird ass connector they came up with. Or how their power plug on the 360 isn't something you'd see standard on other devices.
