Halo Wars vs Xcom. Which game should I play next?

Both. I like XCOM more.

Halo Wars is a bad attempt at a console RTS.

XCOM is a strategy game that works just as well on the console as it does the PC.

And what constitutes as a good attempt? It's a solid console RTS, that I would still play if it weren't Halo. Being Halo themed is just icing on the cake.

I haven't played Halo Wars, but I thought GrimGrimoire for PS2 and King Arthur's World for SNES were pretty good console real-time strategy games with great controls. However those games use an ant-farm perspective and involve smaller numbers of units.

Halo Wars looks like a PC-style RTS that you play with a gamepad, and that has made me wary of it. However, I am still curious to try it.

Anyway, I'd recommend XCOM simply because I know that it is pretty good. Possibly the best turn-based strategy on 360.

Please go into further detail on this. You seem to be incredibly knowledgeable about Halo Wars.

Halo Wars is a great game. To compete online at the highest levels, you absolutely positively have to know what you're doing and how to coutner what the opponent is doing. You have to grab strategic points on the map, decide when to tech up, decide which units or mix of units you will concentrate, whether or not to research upgrades for the units you are making...AKA pretty much every single thing you would do in any other "real" RTS.

There's control groups, stacking moves, microing units during combat...what exactly is it missing?

It's missing all the depth that even crappy budget RTS's have on the PC. Sure, most of the basic strategic elements exist in Halo Wars. But every single one of them is simplified beyond belief. And a lot of that has to due with the fact that you just can't play that type of game properly with a controller. Much of the dumbing down was no doubt done to accommodate this fact. Hell, I doubt a "top tier" player could even break 20 APM with that control scheme.

Full disclosure - how many hours of HW have you ever played in your entire life?

The amount of time your commands take depends on how quickly you can press one button on the d-pad and then the x button to implement your command. Does that take 3 seconds?

It's a good game. If anything negative could be said about it, it would be about gameplay balance and the lack of a 3rd faction. Controls are excellent.

XCOM, easily. Halo Wars is just horrible because the whole point of an RTS is that they involve a lot of strategy. Halo Wars, on the other hand, is so dumbed down that it's essentially a "babies first RTS". In other words, it's the Fable 3 of the RTS genre.

Why talk about games you so obviously haven't even played?

XCom is probably the better game overall, but Halo Wars is good. Damn good. Any hate I've ever seen it get is from PC Elitists who can't have fun with video games and think just because something isn't the exact same as their previous PC titles "it sucks"
