This will stop me from buying the next xbox console

Yeah, but isn't it possible that MS could release a patch right before they take down those old servers? One that gives you access to the content without having to log in? I mean, if they're taking the system down, it's not like they have to worry about people stealing stuff... they won't have access to it anymore anyway.

Wishful thinking, probably.

I wasn't mad when Sega Dream cast didn't play sega saturn games.
ugh this generation of gamers disturbs me.

Give them a slight perk and they think they are always entitled to it.

I'm more concerned with backwards compatability.

I want to play LoK: Defience dammit!

I don't see why folks can't just keep their 360...

It's not that people won't be keeping them. It's that MS won't be MAKING them.

I've only had a 360 for about 3 years or so, and i'm on my third one. One crashed on a system update, the 2nd Red Ringed, the 3rd's been a little sketchy lately.

BC in the new system just says I'll at least have guaranteed support for my existing library.

There's also no guarantee Microsoft doesn't kill Live for the 360, just like they did for the Xbox after some years. And if there is no Live and the 360 breaks, it will be impossible to do the mandatory license transfer.

True, but the LIVE experience is a much more integral part of the 360 than it was the original Xbox. Last gen, it was more of an added bonus. This gen it's almost a necessity. As such, I have a feeling they'll keep the servers up a lot longer. In fact, I expect the 720 and 360 will pretty much be running on the same network/ LIVE setup.

An added bonus? It came out a year after the Xbox did. Bonuses also don't cost $50 a year. It was a main service of the Xbox, just like the Xbox 360.

It's a new console, why would you want it to play 360 games? Keep your 360, there, problem solved.

Sort of. Nobody really needed to get Live back on the original Xbox. Sure, you needed it for online play, but back during the Xbox time, online play was just getting itself off the ground. Plus, there was no major always there community thing with the original Xbox. Outside of the online play stuff, there was very little community and connectivity features utilized for Xbox live. With 360, Live is integrated into everything, including the day-to-day Operating system usage.

But I would be shocked if they really intend to go with no Backward compatibility on the next console. There was a lot behind the 360's specific design that was made just so they could have it. MS could've saved a ton of money by sticking with the previous Xbox manufacturer idea if they didn't plan to have BC on the next system. But they footed the bill and made sure they owned all the chip designs for the 360 just so that they could offer true BC next time.
