Are region locks on the disc or the Xbox itself??

I thought it was based on the hardware but I had my Xbox repaired and the people said its the disc that's locked so there are some games I can play from other regions if the disc itself is not locked, is this right??

If a disc is region locked then all 360s can play it. But if, let's say, it is PAL then only a PAL 360 will play it.

The console itself isn't region free.

Does that mean it doesn't matter where I buy my Xbox?

As long as games are either region free or correspond to your console's region. Tell me where you plan to buy your system and maybe I can help.

@DarkSymbiote

I have a US xbox and brought it to Taiwan, the guy repaired it and I asked if it can still play US games and he said yes. He then also said it can play Taiwan games and I was surprised because I thought it could only play US region games so he explained that its the disc that's locked

It's probably the games that are region locked, not the console itself. I have a US live account running on a ntscj console... i borrowed the walking dead retail disc which is a ntsc version. It won't run coz the game is region locked to ntsc consoles, but when i downloaded the same game off the marketplace, surprisingly it worked.

US 360s support NTSC-U games and Taiwan NTSC-J games. Region free will work for both and sometimes both NTSC games can work as well.

It sounds like what he really means is he got his console modded when he says he got it "repaired."

Basically - it's both.

Each disc has a region code, and each console has a list of region codes it can play built into its firmwre.
  1. Boards
  2. Xbox 360
  3. Are region locks on the disc or the Xbox itself??
