Front mission evolved. Started as strategy, died as shooter.

Resident Evil (Should have stopped at 3)

Since 4 is the best one in the series? Right.

I thoroughly enjoyed RE4. But please remember the topic. We're talking about games that killed their legacy.

Classic RE was a blend of exploration, (obtuse) puzzle solving, atmosphere, and combat. RE4, while a fantastic game, pretty much threw everything away in favor of heavier emphasis on action. Exploration in RE4 was minimal and was reduced to busting barrels or looking for gold behind paintings. Puzzle solving was virtually non-existant.

RE4's action heavy emphasis led to RE5, which was an even further divergence from classic RE. That in turn led to RE6, which couldn't make up its mind on what kind of RE game to be.

So, yes, IMO RE should have stopped at 3. Nemesis was the last RE that had the classic formula. RE4 was a fantastic game, but it forever changed the RE legacy from that of a taut survival thriller to an action game.

RE4 was great enough to stand on its own to have started a new action horror franchise. Instead, Capcom made it part of the RE universe and killed RE's legacy.

Understand where I'm coming from?

It's like Code Veronica and Zero never existed to you. Those were the last RE games that followed the classic formula.

Let's be real here though: what would Resident Evil be like if they followed the same classic formula. Can you, in all honesty, say that if RE4, 5 and 6 followed the classic formula, Resident Evil wouldn't have killed it's own legacy? Somebody said a series can't kill it's legacy and that the blame is placed on a single game. I disagree since there are a few cases where this actually happens.

We've all seen the sales numbers for Resident Evil, I'm guessing. As the series went on with the classic formula, sales diminished and the games received less critical acclaim, starting with Nemesis. You can use other series as examples and you'll get the same result 9 out of 10 times: series that remain the same become stale and eventually die if no change is made. To prevent the death of one of their major game series, Capcom made Resident Evil 4. Was RE 4 different from its roots? Most certainly. Did it kill the legacy? No. The games after RE 1 actually killed the legacy by being more of the same instead of becoming more innovative over time. It took a huge makeover in RE4 in order for RE to continue being a franchise.

So, if any games are responsible for killing the RE's legacy, it's the older games themselves. Had there been more innovation, you probably would have seen a Resident Evil 6 that was still vastly similar to older REs. Same thing happened with Mega Man. After so many games and a realization that people started to hate Mega Man because of it's uninspired gameplay, Capcom took a big chance with Mega Man X. You'll be hard-pressed to find a die hard Mega Man fan that DOESN'T consider Mega Man X to be the death knell for the Mega Man franchise. So...we have the same theory here. That being said, Mega Man X was also one of the most successful Mega Man entries in the entire franchise and it received critical acclaim pretty similar to RE4 for its time.

Unfortunately, history tends to repeat itself and the same thing ended up happening to the X series that happens to all stale series. I remember having to write a paper about this a long time ago. It's odd how a couple courses in game history can really change your outlook on games and grant an educated perspective on industry trends.

tl;dr: lol no

Super Mario Bros. (World was the first bad one, then World 2 Yoshi's Island made us believe again, but then came 64 and it was over, there was no hope left after that garbage had stained the series permanently)

Sonic The Hedgehog (it was a rollercoaster between awesome and above avarage until 2007 when they changed to a horrible voice cast and started making bad games and bad games only)

Crash Bandicoot (died after they stopped making games for the original PlayStation)

Tomb Raider (4 and 5 sucked but with AoD they made one last great game, too bad Eidos had to ruin everything, Chrystal Dynamics tried but ended up with three mediocre attempts that just barely kept the series afloat, after that it finally died)

Final Fantasy (after 12 there was no turning back, too many bad changes had been made and not even the old school nod in the form of X-2 was enough to save the series, the horrible failures that 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 were just slaughtered the series beyond unrecognition, and on top of all that fail there was the 7 compilation that was remarkably even worse)

Resident Evil (4 killed it by being a horrible action-oriented irrelevant mess, it had literally nothing to do with Resident Evil and they made sure we knew the series was permanently dead and would ever never rise again)

Silent Hill (homecoming was almost like the Resident Evil 4 of Silent Hill, it changed just about every good thing to something bad and we all know how horrible the series became after that)

Alone in the Dark (turning it into a first person shooter may not have been their brightest idea)

Need for Speed (the short Underground series has been the only good part in the entire franchise after Need For Speed 2 SE came out on PC all those years ago)

Burnout (started good, then EA took over)

Command & Conquer (started as the best, then it slowly went downhill until they sold out to EA, then it instantly hit rock bottom and made absolutely sure to stay there)

Grand Theft Auto (3 killed it, should've stayed a unique top-down cartoony game rather than trying to poorly copy the infinitely superior Driver series)

Metroid (first person huh? good job. We still have Fusion and Other M but damn, they sure messed things up with the Prime series, hopefully they'll leave the first person scanning out of the formula in future installments)

R-Type (Tactics and taking Command, Irem should use and do both better for this series)

Armored Core (V was ******* horrible, go back to the old style of AC and AC2, stop trying to ruin it, ****)

Those are the ones I have the mental strength to remember the loss of right now.

SimCity, Devil May Cry, Guitar Hero, Final Fantasy, Fable, Dragon Age, Dead Space, every single series that went from a console series, to a handheld series (Valkyria Chronicles, for example!), Silent Hill, Lunar (God, that one is depressing), Grandia Xtreme kind of killed that series, but Grandia 3 came out and was "okay", Star Ocean, I think Metroid Other M has really brutalized that franchise, also, but it'll probably recover.
