MS now has no incentive to make XBLA games transfer over... PSN games don't.

The only console this generation capable of backwards compatibility is the Wii U because its hardware architecture mimics the previous generation like the 80386 CPU can run 80286 CPU programs.

Unless MS will have the next Xbox use a PowerPC based CPU, it will not have backwards compatibility. IBM had its hands in the CPUs for all three consoles during the PS3, X360, Wii generation. As far as it appears, Nintendo still uses an IBM CPU, continuing on its investment. Both Sony and MS are moving to AMD. So either these two are using x86 based CPUs, making it easier to port to and from PC or something completely new. Either way, the processors will be fully incompatible with PS3 and X360 games.

The Wii U can open backwards compatibility with GC games with a USB extension device. The other two will require a PCI-e port for direct connection into the main bus.

Sony has announced a means for backwards compatibility for the PS4, but by design, you will need an awesome internet connection between you and the nearest server (high bandwidth and quality of service) and pay a monthly fee for it, and might be restricted to a time slot to play depending on how many games that the server can run concurrently (1 per connected console) and current demand for service.

Long story short, it you want to continue to play your PS3 and X360 games, don't trade them in, sell them, or give them to some friend.

Yes they do. Wii games do transfer over to Wii U (sure, you have to go to Wii Mode to do it, but it's more than Sony is offering).

Now Microsoft has a choice: suck like Sony or be awesome like Nintendo.

We should all hope they pick the latter.

Microsoft will more than likely have backwards compatibility for 360/XBLA games since their entire architecture since the original Xbox has been PC based.

That one thing of backwards compatibility will make a huge difference in the Next Gen system wars seeing as Sony will be the only one not offering ANY backwards compatibility whatsoever. They've already lost the battle before the first shot was even fired.

Nintendo has full backwards compatibility with Wii games on Wii U.
Microsoft will more than likely have backwards compatibility with 360 /XBLA games.
Sony has NO backwards compatibility whatsoever on their hardware.

I've been a longtime Sony supporter, but no backwards compatibility with even PSN purchases is going to damn far. I put up with no PS2 backwards compatibility, but I won't stand for losing both PS3 & PSN libraries after all these years.

And before anybody says the idiotic comment of "keep your PS3 then", eventually Sony will shut down PS3's PSN access and then poof goes all your PS3/PSN libraries. Sony will also stop repairing the systems eventually. So that's three strikes and your out.

Microsoft would be foolish not to capitalize on this opportunity. Sony has fumbled the ball, and all Microsoft has to do is pick up the ball, run to the endzone and score the touchdown.

I'll wait & see what Microsoft does and how Sony's going to offer backwards compatibility via GaiKai before making my decision on where to go Next Gen, but if Sony's press conference was any indication of how their moving foward, then Next Xbox will be my next purchase.

The 360 uses a power PC based CPU, same as the PS3 and Wii U, and the Durango is likely going to use the same sort of PC-based CPU as the PS4 is.

Which means, actually, no, you likely won't be getting any sort of BC.

We already knew it wasn't BC with retail but I think many people were still holding out hope it would work with PSN titles. I know a lot of people have been saying they'd be extremely upset if their XBLA titles don't transfer over...with this news MS doesn't have much incentive to go the extra mile. Of course now if they do transfer over it'll be a huge edge.

HOW COULD IT WORK WITH PSN TITLES IF THE ARCHITECTURE WON'T WORK FOR DISC-BASED TITLES?

Seriously - the successor consoles either have to have the chipset of the original in it to be backward compatible (so you're paying for the same console twice) or the successor console has to be a derivative of the original which limits its technological advances. Backward compatibility is a BAD THING, not a good thing (see PS3 at launch, Wii).

Pretty much exactly this, and from all we know, the 720 won't be at all like the 360, tech wise, and there's very little financial gain to be had from throwing a freaking 360 inside the thing. People act like they love BC, and hell, some do, Hell, I do! but in the end, all BC really is a bullet point on the back of the box, and something for early adopters to do while they wait for more games to come out. In the long run, BC is just.... kind of pointless for what it'd add to the cost of the system.

360 retail titles - Unlikely to be playable on the next MS console, since it either requires full emulation (no way will the machine be powerful enough) or it requires an additional CPU (like the PS2), and that costs money.

However, XBLA is a far less demanding platform. It's going to be much easier to include it.

Here's the bad thing of all this...given a certain amount of time, none of those titles will be attainable anymore, since they'll shut down online service for those consoles more than likely.

I can go on Ebay and buy old NES games...you'll never be able to do that with things like Ms Splosion Man or Skullgirls.

I don't care about the politics of it or the shareholders or anything else. No BC, no buy. Only thing I got out of the PS4 showing, besides 'nice graphics', is that it will never be in my entertainment center because it kills all BC. If MS wants to follow suit, I'll go PC/Wii U and not even care. Or I'll stop gaming. Who knows. I'll tolerate always online, I'll tolerate no used, I'll tolerate Gold, I'll tolerate ads (so far). I will not tolerate lack of BC.

oh sony...i understand that the architecture is different but you don't tell people all your psn purchases are worthless on the next gen console. you simply tweek them to make them work on it instead because that'll give people even less incentive to buy that system and just stick with last gen
