Something that failed to live up to the promise it held can never be "iconic".
What you need to do is listen to mainstream media. When you heard people mention playing video games in the early 80, they were "playing Atari". In the late 80s and early 90s, they were "playing Nintendo". In the late 90s and early 00s, they were "playing PlayStation". In the late 00s and early 10s, they were "playing Xbox".
Those are the "iconic" consoles.
