i've done this before, I picked up content when it was listed as free but didn't have the game, then if and when I eventually get the game I can redownload that content and have it to play with.

Sometimes content is flagged as free for a set period of time. Happens with games rearly as well, such as Catan, still kicking myself for not playing Xbox when they were offering it for free and missing out.
