Confused about HDMI cables?

#1RPGNinja123Posted 3/23/2013 11:53:13 PM
What was that about years ago when people said their HDMI cables were being blocked by the component port on the back of the xbox slim. Aren't HDMI cables sound and audio in one?

Ah okay so it was just for the speakers.

Speakers or headphones.

The slim model sort of fixes the issue.... it has Toslink optical output on the console. But you'd still have that problem with HDMI cables + component or composite cables if you want to use RCA.

I used a hacksaw and sawed off the little nub that blocks the HDMI port on my composite cables so I could use my headset that hooks up via RCA and HDMI (I'm not using composite for video... >_>)

MS released an adaper that contained RCA ports along with the TOSlink port, and it fit with the HDMI cable in place. I own one. I don't, however, remember how much it cost. Maybe ten bucks?

You can buy one from monoprice.com for like $3.

They discontinued them I believe. I looked long and hard for one before I decided to "mod" my composite adapter.

Get the monoprice dongle if you need one. The workaround (breaking off that piece of plastic) , and some other retail dongles may give you some HDCP issues, such as the xbox rebooting if you change video sources on the TV.

The official one was only available new with the purchase of an Elite (when it was actually bundled with an HDMI cable and the dongle) or with the purchase of the official HDMI cable that was bundled with the dongle, which was $50.

Used, the price could be anything, I bought mine for $4 from the thrift store I work at.
