Whats wrong with my harddrive?

I should've asked this MONTHS ago, but i didnt, so here i go:

I got a 320GB star wars edition 360 slim for christmas, but when i got it all set up, it said i only had 291GB...

What the heck is wrong with my harddrive?

Hard drive manufacturers say a gigabyte is 1000 megabytes, and 1 megabyte is 1000 kilobytes, rather than 1024 like the 360 reads it.

.... i think i understand... but explain this to me, my friend got the exact same xbox and his had 320GB!

Did you bother looking to see what was on the drive before you checked the free space?

Nothing is wrong with your HDD. The amount of usable space on a formatted drive is going to be less than the total capacity. 320 GB is the total size of the drive, but not the amount of usable space.

Did you bother to check that something might actually be on the drive taking up space? Or did you just check the free space and go "OMFGSOMETHINGSWRONG!!!!" ?
