So I just bought a new TV and hooked my xbox up the same way it was before, and I wanted to see if the tv accepted a 1080p signal over component so I set my xbox to 1080p. Problem is, when set to 1080p, I can see what looks to be a shadow to the right of everything. Changed it to 720p to see if it was an issue with progressive vs interlaced, and 720p looks fine. I don't have any other 1080p capable devices so I can't really compare.

I'm not understanding this part

720p and 1080p are both progressive format

Because I had it set to 1080i beforehand.

ah, I see

some TVs don't accept 1080p through component

It sounds like your tv doesn't like interlaced, or isn't able to go to true 1080i. Since it looks fine in 720p, I'd just leave it as is. I don't know of that many games that magically look "so much better!" in 1080i/p on the 360, over the 720p resolution.

Well, you never mentioned anything about 1080i in your text beforehand...
Anyway, you can thank Hollywood for TV manufactures to drop 1080p support over component.

I have an older 360 that doesn't have an HDMI port. Do I remember MS making another video cable I can use that connects to the xbox through the same proprietary connection on the back of the xbox but is then an HDMI cable? I did a quick search on google/amazon and didn't find one.

no

something like that doesn't exist, at least not for video output

VGA cable?

Its not worth the money for it if you can already get 720p or 1080i.

Actually, Mad Catz made one http://shopper.cnet.com/game-accessories/xbox-360-hdmi-conversion/4014-10110_9-33044324.html
That said, you wont get real HDMI quality from it because you convert a analog signal into a digital signal, so you might as well use a normal component2HDMI converter.
