Far Cry 3 has odd aspect ratio?

I always kinda guessed that, for me, Skyrim ha the bars because of the resolution. With games like CoD that allow screen size adjustment, going as far as possible barely is enough, so I guessed Skyrim wasn't designed for a display like that.

I guess the correct way to describe it is that the game runs in some type of letterbox widescreen.

neither of those games are like that on my tv

Most gamers' TV's have significant overscan, and they don't realize it. Yours is clearly among them. Yeah, this crap annoys me TC, it ruined Far Cry 2 for me. I expect a full 16:9 out of my games. They pull this crap as those with ****ty TV's won't notice it.

I don't believe it has anything to do with overscan iceman

I found this from the Far Cry 3 face off at Digital Foundry.

"The first issue to knock on the head is that of resolution and aliasing. There's a strange phenomenon in resolution preferences as of late, and we're seeing more developers opt for slight crops to the overall output image. Just like Criterion's Need for Speed: Most Wanted, the 360 version runs at 1280x704, with eight-pixel borders at the top and bottom of the screen accounting for the reduction. It's unclear how this benefits performance precisely (we suspect it's easier on memory management), but the avoidance of any upscaling means we're left with a very clear image indeed."
