Is it possible for devs to ship 2 discs, install the 2nd and play all from 1st

Sorry if that's confusing, I tried to make it all fit lol.

Basically, can a dev ship more than one disk, and you install all of the disks but can play the whole game from just the first disk and it plays like a say 40GB game because the rest is installed, or rather everything is installed and the first disc is just there to verify?

Possible? I'd go with yes.

But it's probably the devs just being lazy, just like how most game devs have yet to learn how to add a download to our queue, instead they force us to stare at a progress bar if you download something via an in-game menu.

Halo 4 did it

You could do this on the computer for over a decade, so I don't see why not.

Disc 2 was basically DLC, not a second disc.

Forza 3 and 4 did it, but like with Halo 4, the second disc was basically treated like free DLC. It'd be nice to have either the option of installing the other discs if you have an HDD or playing from the discs if you don't have an HDD.

I like how the GameFAQs spellcheck shows that the word "Wii" is fine, but the words "Xbox" and "Kinect" show up as typos.

I think devs should also give an option to put in the first disc of a large game, open the marketplace within the game and then subsequently DL the rest of the game for free (still needing the disc to play of course).

People with no internet or bad/slow connection can either DL it and have it take forever or just deal with switching discs.

So kind of a hybrid physical/digital copy.

Rockstar basically did it with the GoD versions of L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3 (you download the first disc, and then the required data from the additional discs are separate downloads downloaded from the in-game menu).

It won't be allowed by MS policy since all 360 doesn't come with a HDD.

That didn't stop them from publishing Halo 4. The MP is on the second disc.
