How are you defining "art"? From a screenshot? I got bad news for you, games are interactive and screenshots are not games. Thus, you cannot use screenshots as evidence of games being art.

For me, the closest games to have reached "art" status is the Portal series. No other games I have ever played have followed the 3 Act structure of introduction, growth, and confrontation like Portal does. But it's hard to capture that concept in a screenshot so I understand why most people don't get it.

If you guys want to know more about it and how the pacing of gameplay and narrative both follow that 3 Act structure, I'll gladly break it down for you guys/gals.

This post actually deserves a bump, in my opinion.

Story-telling is an art-form, and Portal 2, especially, achieved that level of narrative brilliance.

Static images ripped from games do not make it art, I concur with the above. And what SunDevil said about Journey (subtle story-telling with an emphasis on exploration and growth through silent alliances) and TWD (perfect story-telling structure and more compelling characters than what you'd find in a typical JRPG) typifies true art in this country.

This topic is ****ing stupid.

Second page of the topic. TC has completely ignored every post that contains evidence contrary to his argument. This is where everyone stops posting.

One would hope. But many people don't read the whole topic before posting, thus he will proceed lure some more unsuspecting, rational folks in with his insanity/close-minded BS.

Crap, should have read this first before posting. But but but........... I wanted to contribute in a meaningful way!!! I don't have a niche on this board yet, after damn near 8 years.

Counterpoint.

Japan has a genre for porn and rape games.

BTW, in Metro Last Light, Ranger Mode isn't hard mode.

I can easily name 10 games that are better than most of Japan's games out now.(Opinion)

1. Battlefield 3-Rather you like the FPS genre or not we all got to admit that it is one of the best.

2. Red Dead Redemption-Awesome Story, Open World, and fun gameplay.

3. Halo series-Great story, stays relevant throughout the gen unlike some others.

4. The Witcher series- Mature story, awesome art style, and awesome characters

5. Borderlands 2-Lots of guns

6. Minecraft-A legobox that you can do whatever you want in

7. GTA-Same as Red Dead Redemption, but minus the story

8. Bioshock Infinite-AMAZING STORY, fun gameplay, awesome art style

9. ME series-Some say it defined this gen

10. Skyrim-SO MUCH CONTENT, amazing graphics.

The J's and the W's both have awesome games.

other than looks BF3 is a massive piece of trash and ME started good then became worse trash

They're a Product first and foremost anywhere, as they are an item design to sell first before anything else. Regardless of how you want to see them, all games are a product first, before they are ever even considered art. No matter where they are from.
