Real time strategy by far. Macro and micro management, map awareness, recourse management, etc.

I would have voted Rhythm games like Guitar hero 5 and rockband where there is more than one instrument but went ahead and voted RTS since it was my second place.

To me, fighting. You have to calculate when to use combos and when to block, and predict your opponents moves.

RTS games are no walk in the park either, but they're mostly learning times and finding a pattern that works for you. RTS games in higher tier competitions essentially boil down to a handful of very successful strategies, while fighters are always unpredictable.

That genre didn't even occur to me, thanks for mentioning. I guess that would be considered other :-/

Some other genres not listed: Head-to-head puzzle games. Stuff like Puyo or Magical Drop, where people who can think fast and set up combos will absolutely destroy a less skilled player in a matter of seconds.

Also, do we count online versions of turn-based strategy games? Things like chess or go servers.

Also take a look at rhythm games with graded timing, where simply "hitting all of the notes" is not good enough and will still fail you if your timing is just a few frames off. I know a few local guys that are scary good at Beatmania IIDX and Pop'n Music.
