Games worth getting today? (and mini HL2 rant)

if you dont mind playing an unfinished game then DEFINITELY try out Black Mesa. its a faithfull update to the original and its completely free. Personally iv always liked HL1 more than 2. i liked the more adventure feel they went with it. by that i mean it had a bigger focus on platforming, puzzle solving and i liked its more down scaled engagement. Going through black mesa and what they were doing i also found more interesting than City 17's outing.

So I got Bioshock Infinity. Thinking about XCOM too. Any other games I should consider getting today? Don't really know much about the others so hopefully someone here has experience

EDIT: I should elaborate; I already have Tomb Raider and GoW is still too expensive to warrant me picking up a game in a series I never played

also off topic but I got the orange box; already played TF and Portal, but I figured for the price I might as well try HL2 . . holy crap is it good!! I really wish I would of tried these games out years ago. Is Half Life 1 worth checking out, or is it too dated for a newcomer?

I picked up The Orange Box when it came out.

I attempted to play HL2 6 different times since then. It was just SUCH a bad game. Finally, last summer, I forced and willed myself through this game and finally got to a part with "hammer of dawn" strikes coming down and a mansion. Then I stopped. It was just such an awful game. Finally, I started playing again on July 1st this year. Finished it on July 2nd.

NOT a memorable game at all. I loathed it. Its the only game that has ever given me headaches while playing it. I just can't stand it. It was complete boredom.

So yeah...4 years to finish Half Life 2. And I still got Episode 1 and 2.... :/ And from what I hear, Episode 2 deals a lot with the CraptasticularCancer driving elements. bleh! But I'll give it a shot.

Still debating if I should give Portal a shot :/ Half Life 2 has left such a bad taste in my mouth.

Portal is nowhere near as good as people make it out to be but it's still fun and a hell of a lot better than HL 2

HL2 is pretty much the best FPS ever made, and if a person can't see that well that's their problem and I won't argue.

The original Half Life still looks good. It's an absolutely brilliant game and a total blast to play. The experience it provides is truly amazing and unforgettable. Plus, you'd get a LOT more out of HL2 if you play the original, and any fan of the sequel most def would enjoy the original too.

You might as well ask if a classic like Mega Man or Super Metroid or SMB3 is still worth checking out. Games are regarded as incredible classics for a reason. Time can't alter that, at least not with these or HL

Anyways. This Half Life Source sounds interesting. Is it really around Halo 1 quailtiy? I could totally enjoy that.

It's basically HL1 from 1998 on the HL2 (Source) engine from 2004 (with updates for many years after that). All of the models, levels and textures are as they were in '98, but the lighting and water are all fancy.

Black Mesa on the other hand is a fan-made remake of HL1 in the graphical quality of HL2, on the Source engine. It's not just a facelift, level layouts and gameplay have been subtly tweaked - the early part of the game is vastly different to play in BM compared to the original HL1. It's not complete yet though.

Personally, I'd say it's worth just playing HL1 itself, the graphical difference to HL Source isn't huge, and there are two sequels / expansions that were never ported to Source: Opposing Force and Blue Shift. Both are the same incident as the original Half-Life, but viewed from the perspective of other characters, and add extra detail to the story.
The original HL also has an official 'High Definition Pack', which is a set of updated models from the Dreamcast / PS2 version of the game.

Here's some comparison shots as an example:

Whichever version you choose it's worth a playthrough though, landmark title in PC gaming.

Is Metal Gear Rising worth it, 30 is kinda pricy, but I'm taking the fact that the sale is still going on as a sign that there is still one more game I need haha :P maybe I will consider GoW too
