Can someone list the main complaints people had about GTA IV?

My biggest issue was with how scripted the missions were in an open world game.

Ok, I have to kill a guy, I'm cool with an assassination mission. Hmmm, well I guess I have no choice but to just go right up to his door and knock....which triggers a cutscene showing the target escaping and now it's a chase mission....great.

Why? WTF is even the point of having an open world? Am I the only one that knows the difference between this and the way things used to be back in GTA3?

So I'm kinda excited to see "planning" is part of GTA5. Even if the missions are still heavily scripted, at least I'll get input into how they play out. Hopefully things don't always go as planned and true open world gameplay comes into play and the player is forced to improvise.

"Well yeah... IV ISN'T modern..."

Saint's Row 1 had better shooting controls, argument over.

The Car handling was beyond horrid and the fact that GTA5 is said to have better driving fills me with great joy. The fact is that the driving was HORRENDOUS. I literally took a Taxi through 70% of the game and whenever I was forced to drive I freaking hated the game says something.

It wasn't THAT bad, geez. It just takes some getting used to.

They were awful.

You probably just needed to get better at gaming.

No, they were terrible. There's some racing games (or games in any genre for that matter) out there with just terrible controls, has nothing to do with somebody's level of skill in racing games. GTA IV had terrible car physics. On one hand they felt really light with no weight, yet at the same time it felt like they were trying to be realistic with how easy it was to spin out. A staple of the series, the hand break and skidding around corners, was almost taken away completely in it.

My problems with it

I hate Niko
The other characters were boring
The phone calls drove me crazy
Side missions were boring
Niko controlled terribly and takes forever to stand up
It's all set in one big city, which is a step down from SA's different terrains

The Ballad of Gay Tony was a far superior game/story, and it was just a ****ing add - on.

Along with everything everyone else has mentioned, I'd say the choice of music in the game was pretty lame. Speaking as a rock music fan, Liberty Rock Radio had some excellent bands on there, but for some reason, they chose really weak album tracks, instead of good songs. You had people like David Bowie, Queen, Genesis, The Who, Elton John etc, but they picked "filler" songs that nobody ever liked anyway.
That extended to the other radio stations as well. They seemed to pick unknown artists and bands, not necessarily because they were any good, but just because you hadnt heard of them before. Every song on that radio station with Juliette Lewis was absolute trash.
The rap station and the dancehall station were much worse. The number of times I hopped into a car and heard, "I'm riding wit my top down, with my jheri on" or, "Badder dam dem badder dan dem", or "Wicked in a bed. Wicked man, I'm wicked in a bed". Eventually I turned it off.
The talk radio stations werent much better. The ones in San Andreas, Vice City and GTA3 were really funny, biting and satirical. GTA IV had that, but it just didnt seem like they put as much effort in. They were way too short as well.

my only complaint was the high maintenance friends and their constant phone calls. otherwise the game is 10/10.

This. Most people whining are just SA nuts who hate that IV wasn't SA2.

this doesn't include all those point A to B escort missions where they shove even more conversations and "character development" down your throat.

rockstar has pretty much just become a faux hollywood production office instead of a games developer and it peaked with the atrocity that was max payne 3.

Place your bets now, will the opening cutscene be over or under 15 minutes before the player is actually allowed to, you know, play the game.

I liked the idea behind all the cool stuff in SA, just never got into the story or game itself. VC is my favorite...
