And when my 360 formatted it, a message popped up saying it didn't meet recommended performance and that I might have problems playing games off the drive and saving game saves. Should I return it and get another type, or will it perform fine?

those are the kind I have. I've bought three and every one of them have given me that message. When I try again, it works fine, and i've never had a problem with any of them. I called them once, and they said they don't know why it gives that message, but they know their drives are one of the better performing ones you can use for a 360.

Makes me wonder what MS considers a good flast drive to be.

It'll be fine. They put that up to make you feel bad for not having a Microsoft-certified drive. That's all.

i think the xbox judges it based on write and read speed. write is just how fast files transfer ont it, read is how fast data is written, which is the important one. it probably just finds it has a slow write speed which just means you have to wait a couple extra seconds/minutes when putting games on it and stuff, but loading is the more important part and thats all read speed which is usually fast on all brand flash drives

My 16GB Cruzers work fine... but my 32s give me that message.

What it means is slower write times. Read times aren't really affected from what I have seen, and Sandisk USB drives are reliable that you shouldn't have to worry about randomly losing data.

I have a PNY 32GB that didn't give me that message, and is a bit faster writing than the Cruzers.

They work fine. Here is food for thought the over priced ones with the Xbox logo on them are made by Sandisk.

Just don't stick a Sony in the 360. It will spit it out at you like a bullet!! True story really it is. :)
