Is the XBOX 360 the longest running gaming console ever made in a generation?

Neo Geo was in production from 1990 until 2004. I think that is the longest production run for any console hardware.

Indie games still come out for all consoles, so that is not a very useful measuring stick. I bought a brand new Atari 2600 game earlier this year.

The atari 2600 came out in 1977 and new games like halo 2600 came out in this decade. Try 35 years.

Also of interest, Tempest was just released for the 5200 earlier this year, by the original programmer no less.

Nes: 1983-1994
sms: 1985-1995
Psx: 1994-2004
Ps2: 2000-2013?
Gameboy: 1989-1998?
Nds: 2004-2013?

To better phrase what you were most likely going for with your topic question, the 360 has been the longest running console with regular support and releases without a successor console also in the market.
