What is the best way to avoid console freeze or game freezing?

Freeze every single day.

Don't turn the console on.

try running your device vertically on a flat surface (not carpet) and have a fan facing the system

does it freeze on a particular game?

Try running it without the HDD and see if it still freezes.

You asked a question and provided no details or info. My suggestion is the only answer that will be certain to solve your problem.

Perhaps offer up info in order to obtain a "better" answer.

The point of fans in cooling is not to blow air on to a device. Increasing the air flowing in to the console is likely to increase the dust that builds up as well. Thus causing more over heating.

Not sure I never play my games vertically. But I'll try it.I have so many games install to hard drive.

playing them vertically won't do anything but laser burn them. i couldn't tell you how many copies of call of duty (MW2 up to BO2) i've swapped out for people from doing this. the ps3 and the wii both have a loader style disc drive, where as the 360 has the tray (similar to the ps2) style. when you slap a game in, it's spinning at who knows how fast and the slightest bump causes a magical perfect circle on the disc thanks to the wonder people of microsoft for using a tray instead of a loader, thus giving you a laser burn.

tl;dr try installing games to the hard drive.
