I think the only way to put music on your Harddrive, is to copy a cd to your xbox.

Yup.

Also if it is a burned CD, it must be created as an audio CD. You can't rip songs from a MP3 data CD.

To save you using up a bunch of blank CDs, you can use CD-RW discs (you still need to make a "Disc at Once" audio disc, obviously), and then after ripping the disc to your Xbox 360, you can erase the disc, and re-write to it. I do this with all my MP3s I want to bring over to the Xbox, because I got sick of the way my dashboard and Guide menus would slow down on me, when I had "too many MP3s" on my flashdrive and wanted to navigate to my messages or load a game while I was playing music.
