There's only 1 DMC on the ps3 so that should answer your question about HD.. and I'd play 1, skip 2, play 3 then 4.

Try DMC 2 and see if you like it or not. I own all DMC games; DMC 1, 2, 3, 3:SE, & 4. DMC 2 is the weakest of the series, but I enjoyed it anyway. Play them all in titles' numerical order.

This is how I rate the series:

1. DMC 1
2. DMC 3: SE
3. DMC 3
4. DMC 4
5. DMC 2

Yeah, DMC2 was a pretty weak entry in the series. There are two playable characters but they basically have one main weapon apiece, a few weak sub-weapons and then one or two good sub-weapons on one of the characters. There's also a God Mode button, in the sense that you are invincible while dodging and it doesn't take any time to do, so it's laughably easy compared to the other games.

DMC1 had exceptional atmosphere at the time, though that may be tempered somewhat now since it's a bit older. It had solid gameplay, great levels and interesting enemies, but there weren't many bosses and you had to fight the main bosses multiple times.

DMC3 was less atmospheric and the main enemies weren't as diverse, but it had a whole lot of different bosses and the gameplay was ramped up to allow for stuff like switching weapons mid-attack to create your own combos.

The controls are tight in DMC4 and the gameplay isn't bad but it doesn't really feel like it introduces much which hasn't already been done, and there's a lot of backtracking. You basically play the same game twice, once as one character then again as a more powerful character.

I'd rate them :

DMC 3 : SE
DMC 3
DMC 1
DMC 4
DMC 2

The second one wasn't even made by the orginal team, so I guess you can chalk it's lack of quality up to that.

I recommend staying far, far away from the reboot. If you are going to play it though, play it first, it'll probably feel like a downgrade otherwise.

DMC's fighting system makes GoW's feel stiff and unvaried in comparison. DMC's is a league above.

So yeah, I'd say it's very worth it if you like action games.

I say go for:
DMC 3
DMC 1
DMC 4

Skip DMC 2.

And I see now that you had been asking about story in the original post. ... not a concern. The story is definitely less interesting than God of War and basically just exists to give you an excuse to kill things for fun and profit.
