The back fan on my 40gb PS3 is always very loud.

Even when I am at the XMB, if it has been running for even a few minutes, the back fan turns on and it is extremely loud. Is my 40gb probably about to go out? I've already vacuumed it out from the outside and used compressed air on it, and it is still very loud. Maybe I should sell it and get a slim?

That's your first mistake. Compressed air does more bad then good and can blow dust into your PS3.

If your fan is that bad then yes, get a new slim. I have an 80 GB and it only gets real loud if I play LA Noire (known to overheat PS3/360) and play games online.
