fat ps3 and yamaha hdmi amp who's doing the decoding?!!
Back To: Board List | Topic List | Topic Archived
hi people, this one is for the audio guys who know the score. i have a yamaha vx667 hdmi A/V receiver. it decodes DD/plus,DTS/HD etc and i have my ps3 going directly into it. the s3 is a fat model from 07 (?i think) so it comes up on the yamaha display as LPCM instead of the aformentioned DTS HD etc. my question(s) is: is the ps3 fat model doing the decoding and then sending it to my amp to amplify or is it sending the audio signal down to the amp via the ps3 for the amp to decode? if it's the latter, i feel i've spent money on something that i didn't need to. secondly, whats the score with LPCM,Bitstream/fat models? is bitstream and LPCM the same? i always thought lpcm was lossless hence no sound loss. making it the better. even thought my decoder when hooked up to the ps3 always displays lpcm when i have lpcm selected, is the film or game i'm playing still outputting in dd or dts hd? i don't want any phantom surround sound like PLII!! and lastly, how many ps3 owners own a seperate BD player? i'm tempted to get one but i think is it redundant seeing as how a ps3 has one built in? --- QUEEN RULE. wii code: 2284 5760 6488 3346 name: cshaws wii...

Fat PS3's were incapable of bitstreaming HD audio so it was always sent out as PCM. Meaning your PS3 is doing the decoding and sending it to the amp as multi-channel PCM. Slims can bitstream the audio meaning they send the raw data to the AVR where it is decoded at the player. This is where you get DTS:MA and Dolby True HD showing up on a capable AVR. Gaming is output as PCM 99% of the time with a couple of exceptions. There is no way to select bitstream or PCM. It is essentially defaulted to PCM and if the game doesn't have a DTS track that is selectable, then if you wanted to you would have to go into your options and manually deselect the 7.1 and 5.1 PCM options making it "force" a Dolby Digital Bitstream but really there is no need to. I own a separate Blu-ray player. I always use separates. Just because the PS3 outputs PCM doesn't mean it is lossless. You can have a lossy codec that is output as PCM. --- PSN ID: sled_dogs76 60" Pioneer Kuro Elite PRO151FD, Yamaha RX-V3900 A/V Receiver, Oppo DV983-H player. cheers man, you've been very informative. yeah, as long as i'm getting what i'm paying for. it is very annoying not seeing DD PLUS?DTS HD pop up on the screen of me yamaha but it's a nice piece of kit. just out of interest, bud, i have my setup limited to 5.1 as oppose to 7.1 etc. this is by choice. should i deselect anything beyong 5.1 on my sound settings or will it not make a difference? --- QUEEN RULE. wii code: 2284 5760 6488 3346 name: cshaws wii...

It won't make a difference. Even if you play something that outputs a 7.1 signal, it will simply downmix it at the AVR and will put the rear channel info into the side surrounds. Even if it was outputting 7.1 and you only had 2 speakers hooked up it would simply downmix to 2 channels at the AVR. In the case of games where many games are incorrectly flagged as 7.1 even though they are 5.1 games it is only sending blank info in the rear channels anyway. So long story short, no you don't have to deselect anything and you are better off leaving it selected anyway and let your AVR handle the downmixing as opposed to the PS3. I would trust the Yamaha much more than a PS3. I have a Yamaha AVR myself. Though in the future I will be going a different direction Yamaha has served me well over the last 25 years. --- PSN ID: sled_dogs76 60" Pioneer Kuro Elite PRO151FD, Yamaha RX-V3900 A/V Receiver, Oppo DV983-H player. different direction? you wanna try something else? i had a sony and a onkyo before this...long story goes with them two!! does your yamaha require some volume before you get it really kicking in? http://www.whathifi.com/review/yamaha-rx-v667/user-reviews that's mine! --- QUEEN RULE. wii code: 2284 5760 6488 3346 name: cshaws wii...

Yeah I'm going separates in the future. When I get the upgrade I really want, all my speakers will have their own individual amps just like a sub. I'm going to run XLR connections to just a processor like an Integra DHC80.3 http://www.integrahometheater.com/model.cfm?m=DHC-80.3&class=Preamplifier&p=f# Cleaner cable run and I prefer Audyssey EQ over Yamahas YPAO tech. As for my Yamaha needing volume, I run most games are -18 or -20 decibels from reference. Depends on the game. Movies I crank up more. --- PSN ID: sled_dogs76 60" Pioneer Kuro Elite PRO151FD, Yamaha RX-V3900 A/V Receiver, Oppo DV983-H player. Coming soon: 2 Seaton Submersives from Mark Seaton |
