Audio problem just popped up tonight?

Really hoping this isn't a hardware issue...

OK, tonight my gf was on my PS3, on Netflix, watching a show. She finished one episode, went to start the next epsiode and the audio started skipping. I tried a couple other things in Netflix and while most of them actually didn't skip, there was static and some pops and crackles in the audio (almost like you'd get from a corrupted MP3). It was behaving similarly with music playing from the XMB, then when I played the game the audio was skipping really bad during the game. While it was loading (when there wasn't really any audio coming through) I was getting those pops and crackles through the speakers.

Any idea what's up? This is a "fat" 80gig Ps3 that I bought new in November 2008. It's hooked up to a 32" LCD via HDMI cable, and up until tonight this is the first audio problem I've ever experienced on this console.

Does it happen with regular tv? or only on the PS3?

You can try another physical HDMI port on the tv or try a new HDMI cable. In rare cases a cell phone can cause some nasty popping/crackling interference. Take your phones and put them out in the car just for the hell of it to see if it makes a difference. That one is a long shot but I have seen it before.

Lastly since you are only using tv speakers hook up up the RCA cable and use them for audio. Change the settings accordingly in the PS3.

It only happens through the PS3, I tried the cable box and it was fine. I also tried the other HDMI port and no luck there either.

Bah...Well, this was a relatively cheap HDMI cable so maybe I should try another. I was mostly just hoping it wasn't a hardware problem with the PS3. Maybe I can dig up the component cables, have to look for them...
