What are you going to do with a measly 12 gig?

Install Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on it and then cry.

It's most likely not 12GB. That'd make almost no sense. The documents given to the Brazilian ANATEL (their equivalent of the FCC) stated 16GB, which, while not much better, at least is slightly more realistic. 12GB would mean using two flash memory chips instead of just one, and 16GB is a lot more viable than 12GB (obviously neither is a great amount).

Perhaps it's 16GB with 12GB free for players.

Memory is so cheap, selling different models based on memory available is a scam no matter who does it. Most people are just too ignorant to know any better.

Say that to the 360. If it still had a HDD slot then all is fine. If not then its mainly just for non hardcore gamers.

People do rent games and delete the data when they're done.

Just to briefly run through the answer to this.

A PS3 with 12GB could:

- play any PS3 games that don't require an installation (without any limitation)
- play any PS3 games that do require an installation (with the limitation that the storage space could get full after 2/3/4 installations)
- play Blu-ray and DVD movies
- play and stream music, images, and video
- browse the web, access YouTube, use Netflix, and other online services
- play PSone games

That's quite a lot of things. Really the only people with major issues will be the ones that have many games requiring an installation, or the ones who subscribe to PlayStation Plus, or the ones who intend to download lots of PSN games. If a 12GB/16GB PS3 appears, it looks like Sony will be guessing - probably correctly - that most of those people already have a PS3 anyway.

A low-capacity and (one would expect) low-cost PS3 would appeal a lot to parents, people who are vaguely interested in gaming, and people looking for a decent low-cost media box.
