So im scared to play my ps3 longer then 2-3 hours in 1 sitting

It gets pretty warm it seems after only 30 mins and by the 2 hr mark it feels like an oven. Its on a hard, flat surface with space all around it and a nearby fan to help keep it cool. This is my 2nd ps3 and if this overheats and dies it will be awhile before i can afford another since i am getting wii-u next month. I hate how these current systems are so fragile and break down so fast, not like my atari 2600 and super nes or mydreamcast or 3d0 which all still work to this day.

Well, your PS3 is somewhat comparable to a PC, where as your Atari and NES are not so much.
Dont be scared to use your system though; if it breaks it will happen regardless and will be unavoidable in the end.

Fun fact, it only takes a few seconds to a few minutes for an electronic to reach it's maximum temperature. IF it was going to overheat it would do so in minutes.

Fun fact, it only takes a few nano-seconds to a few seconds for an electronic to reach it's maximum temperature whilst my fluffy cat sits on top of it.. IF it was going to overheat it would do so in that allotted time.

Mine gets pretty warm too, it used to get really hot after about an hour but then I read somewhere about putting 2 or 3 games cases under the edges to allow it to breathe out the bottom. Actually the article I seen it in recommended setting it on top of an empty tuna can but it's all the same logic. Mine still gets pretty warm but not nearly as hot as it did when it's bottom was covered. I play it for like 18 hours at a time now and I don't ever worry about it.

If your PS3 is over 6 months old chances are there is a whole bunch of dust inside it which causes it to heat up more.

No, John. You are the demons.

Don't worry. My first HDTV blew up after a few minutes. The replacement (same model) still works 6 years later. If something happens inside your PS3 there is a good chance nothing you could have done anyway.
