VIII. It set the bar for me and I have yet to have an experience quite like it. I loved it.

FF6 (3) and it is probably my favorite as well, but if I were to play any FF again now it would probably be 8.

FF1 on the Nes and we'd pay my buds little brother a few bucks to xp our party while we were out! Thats my favorite FF memory, tactics is prolly my fav FF game.

FF 1 on the NES about 2 months after it was released. A friend of my cousin bought it. We played it all weekend. I was so addicted to it, I hounded my parents until they bought me the game. It was a life changer for sure. I was only used to Mario and Zelda at that point. The character building was incredible.

As far as innovating, yes, it's my favorite.

As far as the best FF game, no, that is FF 3/6

Nah, I just didn't have a NES or SNES (I was more into the Sega systems), so I never knew about them.
