Why are opinions on the quality of videogames so polarizing?

Great tv shows and movies such as Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Shield, Arrested Development, The Godfather, No Country for Old Men, are almost universally loved. You'll rarely see anyone hate on these shows/movies. However I have literally not seen even one videogame/videogame series that doesn't get its share of hate. The "great" videogame series such as MGS, Final Fantasy, Mario, LoZ have almost as many haters as they do lovers.

Anything popular will get hate.

And I see Call of Duty getting more hate than MGS, FF, Mario, and LoZ combined around here.

Your example isn't very good IMO.

All the games you listed are titles that frequently get sequels and it is the changes in the further iterations of the games that polarize the fanbase. Like FF13 is quite a bit different from earlier games in the series thus all the discussion you see about its quality.

If Breaking Bad were to change out the actors and dramatically change the story when a new season started, you might see a similar uproar. It DOES happen when movie sequels undergo such changes. You just picked bad examples from the TV and movie industry.

Well movies and shows have a bigger audience, but I dont know most games are different not everyone likes rpgs or fps but they like action adventure and puzzle games, each game has it's audience I guess, but I always see a lot of hate for most movies unless they're classics, everyone loves scarface but I saw a lot of hate for the avengers which was this years biggest movie.

People have started forming opinions on how games are supposed to be, and it leads them to a hate frenzy because they feel the developer made the game wrong.

It's not about the quality of the games being polarising, it's just mountainous complaints.

Because gamers are stupid in general. They hate what's popular, and they're selfish enough for not wanting their favorite games to get recognized more.

dont forget forming an opinion without even experiencing the game at hand or using someone elses opinion as their own. Most hate you see at GF is not even based off experience...

A movie is pure plot. A game is a much longer mixture of various things such as controls, music, characters, etc.

People dislike and like certain genres, but gamers are much more vocal about it. A comedy fan going on message boards to say "All action movies suck!" is much more rare than an FPS fan going on a message board to say "All JRPGs suck!". The comedy fan would just simply not watch the movie, and the gamer will be much more likely to complain about it for the hell of it.

>implying Skyrim, CoD, etc. are much better than the smaller, quality games that actually have a heart put into them.
