8 is a great game with a VERY flawed story (unless you subscribe to one of the trippier 'explanations' for why the plot goes to hell after a certain point), but despite a terrible lack of development it still manages to have my favorite cast of any FF. Also has the best minigame of the series.

9 is awesome, there's really nothing to be said except don't let yourself be turned off by the cartoony artstyle.

Final Fantasy VIII's plot is no less weighty, meaningful, or intelligent than that of any game, and Final Fantasy IX becomes just like any save-the-world JRPG fluff (around the time people say it "picks up").

TC, Final Fantasy VIII's "story" can be good or bad depending on what you call the story. If you think of it as the personal story of Squall, rather than of the save-the-world jargon everyone is always gawking at, it's a cool story, and it's always in swing.

Don't listen to the people who are too young for the SNES generation and only mentioned PS1 era games or later.

Play 6. It's the best game in the series.

Don't listen to 22 year-olds. Listen to 25 year-olds.
