IMO:

FF9
FF4 (not the watered-down U.S. SNES version, but any other version)
FF3 (Famicom version preferred)

Close Runners-Up: FF6, FF10

FF10 is the latest one that I've personally finished. I like the battle systems in FF10-2, FF13, and FF13-2, but can't really say much otherwise. I've only played FF8 briefly, and I've never played FF11 or FF14. I kind of like FF5, but the others that I haven't mentioned yet are all fairly mediocre to bad IMO.

I guess that I'm mostly a fan of SNES-era Final Fantasy in general, with the exception of FF10. I consider FF9 to mostly be a throwback of sorts to SNES-era Final Fantasy. In particular, I find it to be most reminiscent of FF4. I guess that FF3 was also kind of the beginnings of the general gameplay of the SNES titles, but without the ATB system.

The only correct answer. 1994-1998 is still truly the greatest time for FF
