I don't understand why people people complain about pretty boys in JRPGs, etc.

I can't see why that's perceived worse than square-jawed musclemen. Besides, most female characters in video games are required to look very pretty. To not apply that standard to male characters seems like a flaky double standard.

I don't think they're so much complaints as people just trying to think realistically... A 120 pound nothing isn't going to be swinging around a 200 Pound sword like a pencil. The rules that govern what can happened and what seems physically impossible are skewed most of the time in imaginary worlds.

then again its just a game and what happens in it has no basis in reality. when it comes to most games i choose not to think realistically, it would ruin my experience.

I don't like looking like a pretty-boy or a square-jawed He-Man. I prefer my male main characters to be completely average-looking.

Most JRPGs don't try to be realistic. That's also part of their charm.

It's just the other side of the spectrum.

I think these complaints usually arise when the "pretty boys" look more like "pretty girls".

I generally don't mind the "pretty boy" appearances, unless it's totally overdone and becomes distracting. It's hard to take a protagonist seriously when they're trying to save the world or whatever, but look as though they spend 5 hours on their hair and make up every day.

Cause they wished they had anime hair, was still in high school and that Misaki Minatoro loved them too...

It's a deep rooted jealousy that many men are afraid of admitting so since they see what they could never achieve they resent it instead. If all the trolls woke up looking like the Persona 4 kid they would be the happiest people in the world.

Look at those hip glasses and windswept hair!!! Their confidence would raise 2000%!!!
