No. A true sandbox game by definition is something like GTA, Saints Row, Just Cause and most WRPG's. JRPG's are more like "Hallway Explorer" style games. It may look open world, but it's not. It's just a series of "hallways" that connect to each other.

None of the tales game would really fit this. The closest that I can think of is Xenoblade Chronicles.

I'm a gamer dang it, not a pc gamer or a console gamer, just a gamer.

Not really, you have to enter into new areas for towns and it`s not completely open (most starting areas for games are closed off or are on another island inaccessible from the majority of the game).

Not all JRPG`s are hallway games, only the more recent console RPG`s feel very claustrophobic.

Would you say that even with those explorable world maps or "overworlds" that it still wouldn't be sandboxy? lol

You can explore but it is just like a map and you can rarely find anything to do but travel and battle! With Sandbox style games there are many things to do from Point A to B on the map!
